10 Words with a Completely Different Meaning Since Becoming a Mom

Since Emily arrived 10 weeks ago, my life has changed completely. I used to be up, out of bed, and ready for the day by 8 AM at the latest, even on weekends and vacation days. Now, I relish my snuggles with my little girl and we often laze around with Gloria until nearly 10 AM! My 8-step make-up routine has been condensed into just enough to avoid alarming people with the dark circles under my eyes. My hair hasn’t been curled and straightened for at least 12 weeks because, in the last few weeks of my pregnancy, I decided getting dressed in somewhat professional clothes was good enough. I live in leggings and oversized sweaters instead of my usual dresses and tights, my workouts revolve around nap time, and the last 4,297 photos in my phone are of Emily.

Motherhood very quickly became my new normal, and I genuinely love every minute of it, even the screaming and the poopsplosions because I get to watch this tiny person grow and change every day. Her huge smiles first thing every morning, her sweet baby sounds, and her little arm clinging to my shoulder while she nuzzles her face into my neck are moments I know will be some of my favorites for the rest of my life. In this very short period of time, I’ve found that it’s not just my life that’s changed, but also some common words. Here’s a short list.

1. Baby

Before -A tiny and young human that cries and poops a lot

After -Your whole heart living outside your body

2. Sleep

Before -Something you did for roughly 6-8 hours a night

After -A rare treasure only for the most special nights

3. Coffee

Before -A delicious caffeinated beverage

After -Your lifeblood

4. Exercise

Before -Walking, running, biking, etc.

After -Doing laps around your house bouncing and rocking your very fussy baby for hours at a time

5. Bath

Before -Sitting in a tub of bubbly water to relax

After -Your baby’s favorite time of the day (and yours because they’re so cute in there!)

6. Laundry

Before -A weekly occurrence

After -A daily occurrence (if not twice a day!)

7. Google

Before -A helpful tool to find information

After -The place where you obsess over your baby’s every move. Some questions are normal (Are babies supposed to stop breathing every so often?) and some are questions you feel no one has ever asked before (If my husband touched raw fish and then a pen and I touched the pen and then my baby, will she be okay?! I wish I was kidding, that was an actual question I googled last week).

8. Baby wipes

Before -Something your mom friends carry around with them

After -Something you use all the time for every possible problem. Spit up? Baby wipes! Spilled food? Baby wipes? Messed up make up? Baby wipes! I’m pretty sure they can fix everything in my house.

9. Free Time

Before -The time you had to yourself nearly every day

After -Nap time! But you spend it catching up on housework or snuggling with a warm snuggly baby, so you really don’t miss it!

10. Mom

Before -The lovely, warm, caring woman who raised you

After -You! How crazy is that?!

What are some words that mean completely different things to you now that you’re a mom? Let me know, I’d love to hear them!
